Ice Axe

Just received my Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe.  This is for the PCT.  On that trail you have to cross some ice fields on the sides of mountains.  The Ice Axe is so you can self arrest if you start sliding off the mountain.  Should be fun!

Note: I did say I was going to document costs. The Ice Axe plus tax and shipping came to $93.54.

  1. Okay, I understand what the ice axe is for, but I am confused about the travel axe. Are you really going to cut down trees for firewood? Break trail? Kill cougars? What, seriously: I am a backpacking newbie and want to know.
PS All kidding aside, I am really impressed with how much you hiked last summer and so glad I found your blog! (Anna told me about it)

  2. I've been watching a lot of Ray Mears survival videos and he seriously recommends carrying one if you head out into Northern Forest wilderness. I might not take it or if I find it useless I'll mail it back. From what I understand the PCT is much more remote than the AT as far as finding towns to get resupplied and since I am traveling alone it might be best to be prepared but the weight is definitely an issue.

I didn't once start a fire on the AT although others did in designated areas. Basically, if I get in trouble the AXE could be a life saver.
