Solio Solar Power Charger

Picked this charger up so I can recharge the Droid while in the field.  So far not impressed with it's solar charging ability.  The reviews were good.  I have it sitting in the front window.  Maybe it has to be outside.  It is also cloudy and rainy today.

Note: The charger is putting on a 20% charge a day hanging in the front window. That is on sunny days.

Hudson Bay Axe

Just received the Hudson Bay Axe I ordered from Snow & Nealley.  About 2.5 pounds.  Will take it on the PCT.  This is the type of axe recommended for surviving in Northern Forests.

Pacific Crest Trail

I've been doing some research into the Pacific Crest Trail which I intend to take a crack at once I finish up the AT this spring. I'll be heading South Bound on that since I won't be able to start till mid June. They sure don't make it easy. Apparently it is illegal to enter the U.S. on the PCT from Canada. Below is the email I received from the PCT Association.

"Hi Michael,

We have received your Pacific Crest Trail Thru Permit request. Recently, we received a letter from U.S. Customs and Border Protection informing us of their policy regarding border crossings. According to this policy, the only way to enter the U.S. legally is to do so at a designated Port of Entry. Unfortunately, there is no designated Port of Entry on the Pacific Crest Trail. It is illegal to enter the U.S. via the Pacific Crest Trail; therefore I cannot issue a permit with a starting point of Manning Park. I have attached the letter, which indicates the designated Ports of Entry that are closest to the Trail. Questions or concerns regarding this policy can be directed to the Spokane Sector Public Information Office at 509-353-2747.

If this information affects your trip plans, please let me know. I can always issue you a permit for a north bound trip, or for a south bound trip beginning at Hart’s Pass (the closest entry point to the PCT on the U.S. side of the border).

Thank you,

DXXX XXXXX

Here is my response and intention. We'll have to see what they say.

"Hi Dxxx,

I've been checking out the Maps. Can I get two permits? One from Hart's Pass north into Canada. Then I'll flip flop and come back into the country through Sumas and start heading South from Hart's Pass.

I am heading out to finish the Appalachian Trail in April and May so heading North bound isn't an option. I'll apply for the entry permit for Canada now.

Thanks

Mike McGrath"
